Where these numbers come from
The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine set an Adequate Intake for total water of about 3.7 liters a day for men and 2.7 liters a day for women. That total includes water from all drinks and from food, and food usually provides around 20% of it.
Needs go up with heat, exercise, illness with fever, vomiting or diarrhea. Some people, such as those with heart failure or kidney disease, are told by their doctor to limit fluids. Follow your own care team's advice if that applies to you.
